The Mount St. Mary's men's basketball team had four chances to win the game on the final possession, but lost its fifth straight game last night, 58-57, against host Long Island.

James Williams (17 points) made two free throws with 11.6 seconds remaining to seal the win for the Blackbirds (7-10, 4-4 Northeast Conference).

Charles Cook led the Mount (5-12, 3-5) with 13 points.

Iona 80, Loyola 71: The Greyhounds (3-14, 2-6 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), who were led by Shane James' 15 points, remained winless in eight road games this season. The Gaels (7-11, 3-5) beat Loyola for the 17th straight time.

Morgan State 80, UMES 60: Timothy Berkley scored a team-high 16 points to lead the visiting Bears (6-11, 4-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) past the Hawks (1-15, 0-7).

Washington College 85, Muhlenberg 76: Jonathan Webb scored 28 to lift the Shoremen (6-10, 3-6 Centennial Conference) over the visiting Mules (8-8, 5-4).

Hood 72, Gallaudet 65: Santo Provenzano's 36 points led the host Blazers (9-8).

Women

UMES 65, Morgan State 51: Led by freshman Kristi Veltkamp's career-high 18 points, the host Lady Hawks (4-10, 4-3 MEAC) ended their two-game losing streak. Markeda Hollingsworth led the Lady Bears (2-12, 1-6) with 12.

McDaniel 71, Gallaudet 53: Sara Franz had 14 points as the Green Terror (15-2) beat the visiting Bison (4-8).

St. Mary's 80, Salisbury 77: Taylor Yearwood paced the host Saints (9-6, 3-2 Capital Athletic Conference) with 16 points as they defeated the Sea Gulls (10-7, 4-2) in double overtime.
