The Ravens hired former Miami Dolphins assistant Clarence Brooks as defensive line coach yesterday, a day after he interviewed for the job.
Brooks, 53, comes to the Ravens after five years in the same capacity in Miami, where he was not retained by new Dolphins coach Nick Saban.
In Miami, Brooks mentored four Pro Bowl players, including three-time selection Jason Taylor. He also received credit for developing undrafted end Adewale Ogunleye, who led the AFC with 15 sacks in 2003 .
Brooks will take over a Ravens defense that registered 39 sacks this season and allowed 3.6 yards a rush, which tied for the second-lowest average in the league.
"The first thing about the defense in general is that they are a very proud group," Brooks said in a statement. "They play hard, and they're very well-coached. I just hope to be able to add to that and keep that going."
Brooks replaces Rex Ryan, who was promoted to defensive coordinator this week after coaching the Ravens' line the past six seasons.
The Ravens, meanwhile, will retain running backs coach Matt Simon, who withdrew from consideration to be the University of Washington's offensive coordinator.
Simon, receivers coach David Shaw and assistant Jedd Fisch will be the only holdovers on the offensive coaching staff.
Linebackers coach Mike Singletary might join San Francisco as defensive coordinator. The 49ers have asked the Ravens permission to speak with Singletary.
If Singletary leaves, outside linebackers coach Jeff FitzGerald could take over the unit.
