City schools head hospitalized

Baltimore schools chief Bonnie S. Copeland was hospitalized last night after complaining of feeling ill during a school board meeting.

Copeland walked out of the boardroom at school system headquarters about 2 1/2 hours into the meeting. Paramedics arrived a short time later and took her to Mercy Medical Center, according to the school system's chief of staff, Jeffery N. Grotsky.

A school system spokeswoman said that Copeland, who is in her mid-50s, was experiencing chest pains and shortness of breath and would spend the night in the hospital so that doctors could perform tests today. Hospital staff declined to say anything about her condition.
