The Maryland women's basketball team's upset of then-No. 5 North Carolina on Sunday night vaulted the Terps from 21st to 15th in this week's Associated Press poll, which was released yesterday.
Maryland (11-2, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) stunned the Tar Heels, 92-77, and earned its highest ranking since the school finished 11th in the final poll of the 1992-93 season.
North Carolina (12-2, 0-1) fell into a tie for ninth with Michigan State.
The Terps also swept the weekly ACC honors, with the conference announcing yesterday that sophomore guard Shay Doron was named Player of the Week and freshman center Crystal Langhorne was selected Rookie of the Week.
Doron scored a career-high 37 points against the Tar Heels, the third-highest total in school history. The Great Neck, N.Y., native also grabbed seven rebounds and collected five steals for the first ACC Player of the Week honor in her two-year career at Maryland.
Langhorne posted 23 points and a career-high 14 rebounds Sunday night. This is the second straight week the post player from Willingboro, N.J., has won Rookie of the Week.
Doron and Langhorne are the second pair of Terps to sweep ACC honors in the same week. Kalisa Davis and Tiffany Brown won Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Feb. 24, 1997.
