HAGERSTOWN - The Winters Mill indoor track and field program traveled a familiar road yesterday.
Winners of Carroll County championships on both the boys and girls sides last season for the first time in school history, the Falcons made sure the titles stayed with them for at least another year by walloping the field at Hagerstown Community College.
The boys team outdistanced runner-up Liberty, 130-81. The girls squad was nearly as convincing, compiling 129.9 points to North Carroll's 93.2.
The boys were led by seniors Chris Stinnette and Joe Taylor. Taylor won the 55 (6.6 seconds) the 300 (36.7 seconds), teamed with juniors Aaron Kennedy, Dan Krolus and Ndang Azang-Njaah to grab the 800 relay (1:37.1), and joined Kennedy, sophomore Tom Martz and senior Dave Robertson to win the 1,600 relay (3:46.2).
Stinnette captured the 500 in 1:10.4 and the 800 in 2:07.05, and joined Robertson, junior Dan Adamczyk and Martz to win the 3,200 relay in 8:38.45.
"The coaches [Paul Burnside and Jim Shank] held a meeting with us before the season and said that this year we needed to work harder and that we could accomplish a lot," Stinnette said. "That motivated us."
Winters Mill also picked up a victory from Robertson in the 3,200 (10:22.53).
Century senior Chris Jones took the 55 hurdles in 7.2 seconds and high jump with a school-record mark of 6 feet, 3 inches.
North Carroll senior Tim Wunderlich successfully defended two of the three county titles he collected last season. Wunderlich, who won the high jump last year, grabbed crowns in the shot put (48 feet, 0.5 inches) and the pole vault (12 feet, 6 inches).
Liberty senior Carl Henn took the 1,600 in 4:49.14.
On the girls side, the Falcons rode victories from junior Katie Hertsch in the 800 (2:34.96) and 1,600 (5:22.72), junior Chynna Butler in the 55 (7.5), junior Bethaney Perna in the pole vault (7-6) and their 800-relay squad of Butler, seniors Anna Mackley and Ashley Marso and junior Sara Sollott (1:55.60).
Wins from sophomore Brittany Poist in the 300 (45.1), senior Kristin Duling in the 500 (1:25.9), junior Tinsley Stokes in the high jump (5 feet) and the 1,600-relay team of Duling, Stokes, Poist and freshman Devin Meade (4:32.01) propelled North Carroll to second place.
