Evelyn R. Brewer, 94, flower show judge

Evelyn R. Brewer, a homemaker and nationally accredited flower show judge, died of pneumonia Dec. 30 at Genesis ElderCare in Severna Park. She was 94.

The former Evelyn R. Harvey was born and raised in Abilene, Texas, and attended Abilene Christian University.

She was married in 1931 to John H. Brewer, and they moved to Baltimore in 1933. Longtime residents of the Fellowship Forest neighborhood near Towson, they moved to Gibson Island in the 1970s.

Her husband, an inventor and former research director for a Baltimore pharmaceutical manufacturer, died in 2002.

An avid gardener, Mrs. Brewer was often called upon as a judge for the Philadelphia Flower Show, National Flower Show in Baltimore, and horticultural exhibits at the Maryland State Fair.

"She was interested in all types of horticulture, but primarily roses," said her daughter, Elizabeth Brewer Butler of Gibson Island.

Mrs. Brewer was a member of the Gibson Island Garden Club, Halten Garden Club and Ikebana International, an organization devoted to the Japanese art of flower arrangement.

She was a founding member of the Church of Christ on University Parkway, where she had taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school.

Services were Friday.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Brewer is survived by two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
