BOYS

Ethan Cohen

Hammond, wrestling

The 119-pound senior went 3-0 with two pins last week, improving to 15-1 with 14 pins. A defending Howard County and region champion and Class 2A-1A state runner-up, Cohen has led No. 4 Hammond (13-0) to a 4-0 league record.

Cohen had pins in the first and second periods in tri-meet wins over Wilde Lake and Oakland Mills on Dec. 21. On Thursday, Cohen's takedown with 12 seconds left secured a 6-4 victory over previously unbeaten David Heckman, lifting Hammond to a 30-27 dual-meet win over fifth-ranked, defending county champ River Hill and avenging a 7-6 loss to Heckman.

Only a fourth-year wrestler, Cohen was ranked No. 2 in The Sun coming in against Heckman, who was rated No. 1. Cohen has a weighted 4.5 grade point average (3.8 unweighted) and scored 1,350 on his SAT. He is considering Brown, Duke, Franklin & Marshall and Williams College of Massachusetts.

GIRLS

Candice Walker

Towson Catholic, basketball

The Owls' floor leader helped orchestrate the biggest upset of the girls basketball season so far, with 15 points and seven assists in a 70-62 win over then-No. 2 Institute of Notre Dame.

The 5-foot-6 sophomore point guard also had five rebounds and two steals. She shot 50 percent from the field, including 2-for-2 from three-point range, and played all 32 minutes. Walker also had 10 points and six assists in a 60-49 win at William Penn in York, Pa. An AAU veteran who also played for the Owls' Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland C Conference volleyball champions, she averages 10.1 points and 6.5 assists for the No. 9 Owls.
