One person was killed and two others were injured in a multiple-vehicle crash last night on Belair Road near Gunpowder Falls State Park in Kingsville, Baltimore County police said.

The accident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. when the driver of a Mitsubishi heading south in the 12600 block of Belair Road, near New Cut Road, crossed a double-yellow line and crashed into a northbound vehicle, police said.

The Mitsubishi - driven by a man whose license had been suspended - then careened onto the parking lot of the nearby Kingsville Tavern and hit two other vehicles, police said.

A passenger in the northbound vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the Mitsubishi suffered multiple injuries and was flown by a state police helicopter to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in critical condition.

A second injured person was taken by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, but the extent of the injury was not available.

Charges against the driver of the Mitsubishi - who was conscious and questioned by police after the crash - were pending an investigation of the accident, police said.

Names of those involved were withheld pending notification of family members.

The crash brought to 610 the number of people killed in traffic accidents statewide this year, compared with 600 at the same time in 2003, according to state police.
