Desmond Shawe-Taylor, director of the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London since 1996, has been appointed surveyor of the queen's pictures, the Royal Collection Trust in London announced this week.

He succeeds Christopher Lloyd, who's retiring in July. When he starts his new job in April, Shawe-Taylor will have curatorial responsibility for 7,000 oil paintings and 3,000 miniatures on display at the principal royal residences.
