Runner of the Year

Brett Kelly, Bel Air

Kelly, who had posted three top-10 finishes in three regular-season invitationals, took home the county championship when he crossed the finish line in 16 minutes, 11.48 seconds.

He followed up that stirring victory by holding off a strong challenge from Mervo senior Julius Coleman to claim the Class 3A North region crown in 16:08.16. Kelly was third at the Barnhardt Memorial Invitational and sixth at the Harford Invitational.

Coach of the Year

Shawn Loper, Bel Air

Loper, who watched five of his top seven runners from last year's regional championship graduate, built a young squad around Brett Kelly, unearthing several finds in sophomores Andrew Mahone and Elliot Mattson and freshman Andrew Judd.

Although the Bobcats didn't win nearly as many invitationals as they did last season, they did take perhaps the most important title to them: the county championship. Bel Air closed out the season with a runner-up finish at the region meet and a ninth-place showing at states.
