Offensive Player of the Year

Ben Hostetler, River Hill

The senior quarterback passed for 16 touchdowns, ran for eight more and returned an interception for one.

He was always depended upon to produce the big play for the Hawks, who went 10-0 in the regular season for the first time before losing a close game to Douglass of Prince George's County in the playoffs. Hostetler completed 98 of 197 passes for 1,415 yards and rushed 62 times for 218 yards to lead the Hawks to a second straight county title.

He intercepted 10 passes to set a school record, and set the mark for total offense in a season at 1,633 yards. He also set school records with 16 touchdown passes, 30 for his career and four in one game.

In the past two seasons, he passed for a combined 2,770 yards.

He is looking at Ivy League schools or Georgetown.

Defensive Player of the Year

Brian Taylor, Long Reach

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound junior linebacker made 77 solo tackles and 74 assists and was a chief reason the Lightning made the playoffs, where it lost to Gwynn Park, 20-19, to complete a 9-2 season.

"He's the best linebacker I've ever coached," said Lightning coach Pete Hughes. "He has an instinct for the game and studies game film intensely. He's like a coach on the field. He's a coach's dream."

Taylor has excellent lateral movement and his tackles are explosive.

The two-year varsity player, a captain, is being recruited by Maryland, Virginia, Syracuse and Pittsburgh.

Coach of the Year

Brian Van Deusen, River Hill

In his fifth year as head coach and ninth season overall, Van Deusen's team surpassed expectations after returning just three starters. The entire line graduated.

But that didn't stop the Hawks from going 10-1 and capturing a second straight county title.

"I have a terrific coaching staff and continuity in coaching and that helps a lot," said Van Deusen, 30. "We also had four strong senior captains."

The Hawks played with five linebackers to compensate for lack of size on the line. And quarterback Ben Hostetler also played defense for the first time, intercepting 10 passes.
