Rev. John D. Mulligan, 75, Marianist priest, pastor

The Rev. John D. Mulligan, a Marianist priest who served as pastor at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Sykesville during the 1980s, died Dec. 5 of heart failure and respiratory complications in Dayton, Ohio. He was 75.

Born in Cleveland, Father Mulligan earned a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Dayton and a master's degree in religious education from the Catholic University of America. He was ordained in 1957.

He spent more than 20 years in Dayton, where he was a theology instructor at the University of Dayton, editor of Mary Today magazine and a director of the Marianist Mission. He had many assignments as a teacher, administrator and counselor in the United States, Puerto Rico and Switzerland. He was director of the Institute of Spirituality and Worship at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, Calif.

Father Mulligan came to St. Joseph in 1982 as associate pastor and was pastor when he left in 1986, said the Rev. Paul Reich, the church's associate pastor.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated yesterday.

He is survived by a sister, Dorothy Hanrahan of Pepper Pike, Ohio.
