Kosher candy for Hanukkah

Remember the heroes of Hanukkah with a whimsical treat developed by a local entrepreneur.

Maccabeans are kosher jelly beans named for the Maccabees, who defeated the Greeks and reclaimed the Temple Mount in Jerusalem in 165 B.C.

The product is the brainchild of Susan Sklar of Reisterstown, who says she got the idea several years ago when her then 2-year-old son came home from day care and said he had eaten Maccabeans. Sklar, who used to run a vintage clothing shop, searched for a kosher jelly bean maker and in May launched her product.

Maccabeans are available in selected Giant and Shoppers Food Warehouse stores; Gourmet Again and Jacob's Ladder in Pikesville; Pern's Hebrew Book & Gift Shop in Reisterstown; and other stores. They have a suggested retail price of $2.99 for an 8.5-ounce package and 99 cents for a 2-ounce bag.

SALSA, ANYONE?

Beets, the vegetable of borscht, is learning to salsa. Seneca Foods Corp. has introduced canned beets with hints of orange and lime that are perfect for this salsa recipe:

Rinse, drain and chop one 15.5-ounce jar of Aunt Nellie's Ruby Red Sweet and Sour Harvard Beets. Peel, seed and dice 1 medium orange.

Combine the beets with the orange pieces and add 2 tablespoons of chopped green onion, 2 tablespoons of minced cilantro, 1 tablespoon of fresh lime juice, 2 teaspoons of fresh ginger and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.

Stir to combine. Cover and refrigerate for about 30 minutes to let flavors blend. Serve with crackers, flatbread or chips. Makes about 2 cups.

Per tablespoon serving: 12 calories; 1 gram protein; 1 gram fat; 1 gram fiber; 3 grams carbohydrate; 0 grams cholesterol; 60 milligrams sodium

Meal for you aids the hungry

Applebee's Neighborhood Bar & Grill has joined with the Maryland Food Bank in a program to help feed hungry Maryland residents this holiday season.

Between now and Dec. 18, Applebee's will donate 10 percent of each order to the food bank when customers present a coupon that is available on the food bank's Web site, www.mdfoodbank.org. One $20 order will trigger a donation sufficient to provide two nutritious meals to a family of four.
