McDaniel College to screen, discuss movie `Awara Soup'

McDaniel College's Office of Multicultural Services will hold its monthly film series on "Exploring Our Connections: Documenting Our Lives" at 7 p.m. tomorrow in Hill Hall Room 108.

Awara Soup will be shown with subtitles. The film focuses on a global village in the backcountry of French Guyana on the edge of South America.

In Mana, 1,500 people speak 13 different languages and live together in harmony.

Refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m. A discussion of the film will be held after the viewing.

Carroll Players to hold `Steel Magnolias' auditions

The Carroll Players will hold auditions for its spring play, Steel Magnolias, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Carroll Arts Center in Westminster.

Roles are open for six women: Truvy Jones, 40 to 50 years old; Annele Dupuy Desoto, 18 to late 20s; Clairee Belcher and Ouiser Boudreaux, both 60-ish; Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie, 20s to 30-ish; and M'Lynn Eatenton, 45 to 50-ish.

Auditions are open to the public. The play will be held March 11 to 13.

Underground Troupe's `Cyrano de Bergerac'

The Underground Troupe of Carroll Community College will perform the play Cyrano de Bergerac in the Scott Center Theater at the 1601 Washington Road campus.

Show times are 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with a matinee at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 12. Admission is $5.

Cyrano de Bergerac is a classic tragicomedy about heroism, honor and love. The story follows the life of a brilliant scientist, writer and swordsman, de Bergerac, and his unrequited love for his cousin, Roxanne.

The title character's exaggerated facial features cause him to shrink from romance and find a surrogate for himself in a handsome friend.

Westminster Ballet Theatre to present `The Nutcracker'

The Westminster Ballet Theatre will present The Nutcracker at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 19 and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 20 and 21 in Alumni Hall at McDaniel College.

It is the dance studio's second year performing the ballet in Carroll County, and it features a full-length production of the story based on E.T.A. Hoffman's tale of Clara, the little girl who receives a nutcracker as a gift from her toymaker grandfather.

The nutcracker takes her to the Land of Snow and Enchanted Forest Wonderland, where dancing snowflakes welcome them. "The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" is a highlight of the ballet.

The cast will perform with award-winning dancers from the State of the Arts Dance Center, as well as internationally distinguished guest artists.

Guest dancers include Sergio Neglia and Sherri Campagni from the Buffalo City Ballet, Greater Buffalo Opera Company and Chautauqua Ballet Company; and Samuel Beckman and Ivanova Aguilar from Ballet Memphis, MOMIX, State Street Ballet, Nuevo Ballet in Mexico City and the Joffrey Ensemble Dancers.

Tickets are $20 for adults in advance and $25 at the door, and $12 for children.

Alumni Hall is on West Main Street on the college campus in Westminster.

The Nutcracker also will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Eichelberger Performing Arts Center in Hanover, Pa. Tickets are $18 for age 12 and younger, and $27 for adults in advance, and $20 and $27, respectively, the night of the show. Information: 717-637-7086.
