Poplar Springs parish plans to hold pancake breakfast tomorrow

The Men's Club of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church in Poplar Springs will hold a pancake breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in the church hall, 1125 St. Michael's Road.

Free rides will be offered on the church parking lot with Santa Claus in his mule-drawn sleigh. A photographer will take pictures (donations are requested), or take your camera.

A $5 donation is requested for adults; $2.50 for children to age 10. Those who attend are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots program.

Advent retreat tomorrow at Christ Episcopal

Christ Episcopal Church, 6800 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia, will present a Quiet Advent Day from 8:30 a.m. to noon tomorrow.

The Rev. Barbara Seras will lead the retreat and officiate at the Holy Eucharist from 11:15 a.m. to noon. The service will include a liturgical dance, journaling, centering and silent prayer.

Bon Secours offering Advent celebration

Bon Secours Spiritual Center, 1525 Marriottsville Road, Marriottsville, will offer a celebration of Advent, a reminder to sit in the presence of God, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on each of the three remaining Monday evenings in Advent, next week, and Dec. 13 and 20.

Arrival is at 5:45 p.m. An optional dinner starts at 6 p.m. Registration for dinner is requested one day in advance; registration is not needed for the presentation and prayer time. Light refreshments will be served.

An donation of $12 is requested for dinner.

The center will present Dances of Universal Peace, a type of meditation in movement inspired by the work of Samuel Lewis, who studied several world religions, including Sufism. No experience is necessary to participate in the dances, which will be held at 7:30 p.m. today.

Hopkins United Methodist holding citrus fruit sale

United Methodist Men and the Health and Welfare Committee of Hopkins United Methodist Church, 13250 Highland Road, Highland, is sponsoring a sale of navel oranges, red grapefruit and tangelos.

Mixed gift boxes cost $13; mesh bags, $14. A half-case costs $19; whole cases cost $28.

Pickup is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 11 or 12, after the 11 a.m. service. Local delivery is available.

22nd `Messiah Singalong' slated at 6 p.m. Sunday

The 22nd Messiah Singalong at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday.

The singalong will feature soloists, a combined Mormon choir and an orchestra. Dana Rothlisberger will conduct.

Admission is free. Free sheet music will be provided.

A live outdoor Christmas pageant with a living nativity scene and a display of more than 100 nativity sets from around the world will be presented at the church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 10.

Parent Resource Place offering new programs

The Parent Resource Place of Jewish Family Services is offering new programs.

A parent-child program with songs and stories, "Shabbat is Here!" is planned for 10 a.m. Dec. 10 at the Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City.

Admission is free, but registration is requested.

"Childbirth B'Yachad: Childbirth Preparation with a Jewish Perspective" will be offered from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for six Tuesdays, starting Jan. 4.

The classes will be taught by Helaine Brenner, a certified childbirth instructor, with presentations by local rabbis and mohels. Topics will include Jewish family life and folk customs; community resources in Howard County; birth plans, labor and birth; choosing a Jewish name; the bris and baby-naming ceremonies.

Playgroups for new and seasoned mothers, "Child and Me" classes, "Welcome to Our World" for newborns, volunteer opportunities and the chance to meet other parents, discuss child-rearing and make friends are also offered.

Parish to celebrate a Mass of Anointing

St. Louis Church, 12500 Clarksville Pike (Route 108), Clarksville, will celebrate a Mass of Anointing at 4 p.m. Sunday.

The liturgy, which will include the Sacrament of Anointing, is intended for caregivers, people whose lives have been touched by illness and for those who rejoice in God's gift of healing.
