WINE OF THE WEEK

December 01, 2004|By Michael Dresser

2003 Kris Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie ($11). Most Italian pinot grigios are bland and insipid white wines, but this example from the Alto Adige region in northeast Italy is a standout for both quality and value. It's a full-bodied, dry pinot grigio with a pronounced character of almond, honey and minerals. The aromas are floral and the flavor brings nuances of pear and lime. The influence of oak barrels is subtle rather than heavy-handed. It's a superb value, worth buying in quantity for consumption over the next year. It would be a worthy companion with swordfish or salmon.
