Defense attorney Timothy M. Dixon, however, cautioned the jury against holding his client responsible for the shootings by what he called "guilt by association." He called as witnesses five Randallstown students and staff members who said they did not see McCullough with the gun, including one boy who said McCullough was still being beaten up as gunshots rang out.

Dixon said yesterday that he was "displeased" that jurors convicted his client of anything.

"I respect the verdict that the jury came up with, but I believe that it is a product of them not believing the state's case in its entirety but being outraged by what occurred" at Randallstown, he said.

Tyrone Brown, 24, pleaded guilty in September to attempted second-degree murder and a handgun charge, and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Another man, Antonio Richard Jackson, 21, is awaiting trial on charges of attempted first-degree murder.

In sentencing the convicted gunman, Cavanaugh called Tyrone Brown a "suburban terrorist" and told him that he would have handed down a longer prison term had he not been bound by the plea agreement reached between prosecutors and Brown's attorney.
