Eighty-six of Baltimore County's 162 public schools were honored by the Maryland State Department of Education for performing well on the Maryland School Assessment tests earlier this year, officials announced today.

The schools were evaluated on both the overall achievement on the statewide tests and on the improvement of a subgroup of students taking the tests. Twenty-six schools will receive a monetary award.

The awards are part of the state's School Performance Recognition Program, mandated under the federal No Child Left Behind legislation. Prior to the federal requirement for a recognition program, Maryland had honored high-performing schools since 1996.

Superintendent Joe A. Hairston said the county's early focus on school and student accountability led to the increased performance.

"We are very gratified by the honor afforded these dynamic schools," Hairston said in a statement. "Their recognition shows that improved student performance extends across Baltimore County and across student demographics. It shows that every child in our school system has the opportunity to meet and exceed his or her academic potential."

The state Department of Education is to provide certificates and monetary awards to schools later this year. The county school system plans to recognize each of the honored schools at a special event, yet to be scheduled.
