BOYS

Matthew Centrowitz

Broadneck, cross country

The sophomore led the Bruins to their first state cross country title since 1984 by capturing the Class 4A race in an overall meet-best time of 16 minutes, 38 seconds.

Centrowitz, who played soccer last fall, passed reigning state champ Ricky Flynn of Damascus and Andrew Jesien of Walter Johnson on the way to becoming his school's first male cross country champion.

Earlier this season, he won the Harford Invitational and county and region titles, finished second at the Knights Invitational and Meade Autumn Classic, was third in the Bull Run elite division and seventh at Georgetown.

GIRLS

Stacey Krebs

Liberty, volleyball

A 6-foot middle hitter, Krebs led the No. 1 Lions to a sweep through the Class 2A West region with 3-0 wins over South Carroll, South Hagerstown and North Hagerstown. She had 29 kills and 19 blocks and was 38-for-39 on serves during last week's run as the defending state Class 2A champs improved to 17-0 and won their 36th straight match.

The senior's stats likely would be more impressive if the Lions had not overwhelmed their opponents, such as in the 25-8, 25-9, 25-20 win over North Hagerstown on Friday night in the regional final. Krebs, an All-Metro first-teamer last season, had 13 kills and seven blocks in that match.

Krebs, a veteran club player, has averaged 3.9 kills per game and has made only 31 hitting errors on 241 attempts all season. She also serves at a 96 percent rate and is the Lions' top passer.
