Star Jones ties knot Saturday

November 15, 2004

Star Jones, co-host of ABC's The View, married banker Al Reynolds in a star-studded Park Avenue bash.

Notables ranging from Spike Lee to Sen. Hillary Clinton packed into St. Bartholomew's Church Saturday to watch Jones, 42, who wore a a designer strapless wedding dress with a 27-foot train, exchange vows with Reynolds.

"The train was so long it took about seven people to carry it," said friend and guest Valerie Simpson, songwriter and half of the R&B duo Ashford and Simpson.

With songstress Patti LaBelle performing, and a bridal party including Natalie Cole, Vivica A. Fox and Holly Robinson Peete, the storybook wedding lasted until 8 p.m. before moving to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel for an equally celebrity-heavy reception.

"I smiled a lot," said another View co-host Barbara Walters. "I was happy for her. She had the biggest smile I've ever seen."

A song of hope

Some of Britain's biggest pop stars gathered yesterday to record a new version of the hugely successful 1984 fund-raising hit "Do They Know It's Christmas?" being rereleased this year to benefit victims of violence in Sudan.

Coldplay's Chris Martin, Jamelia, Ms. Dynamite, Will Young and members of the bands Busted, the Darkness and Sugababes were all part of the project, called Band Aid 20.

Paul McCartney, U2's Bono, Dido and Robbie Williams also participated in the new version, making their contributions earlier.

Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, who wrote the song, organized this year's effort, which will benefit those suffering in the Darfur region of Sudan. The original record raised millions for those starving in Ethiopia. The song is due out Nov. 29.

U2 returns

Look for U2 to start its world tour on March 1 in Florida in support of its new album, the band's manager Paul McGuinness told Billboard. He did not specify in what Florida city the band will kick off their tour.

"We'll play approximately 35 shows in the arenas in the spring in the U.S.," McGuinness said. U2 will then play 30 stadium shows across Europe, return to North America for another 35-date arena swing and finish up in Japan and Australia.

The band's album, How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, will be released Nov. 23 in the United States, and a day earlier internationally.

Rumors have circulated that potential openers include Snow Patrol and the Scissor Sisters. McGuinness said no decision has been made, but added "We love Snow Patrol."

Photographers sue

Two photographers sued Cameron Diaz and her boyfriend Justin Timberlake for assault and battery, claiming the celebrity couple taunted and attacked them outside a fancy Los Angeles hotel.

Saul Lazo and Jose Gonzalez said the actress and pop singer threatened them as they tried to photograph the couple near the famed Chateau Marmont on Nov. 6.

The lawsuit filed Friday said the photographers, on assignment for a photo agency, did nothing to harass the couple and stood more than 10 feet from them until Diaz ran at Lazo, hit him in the neck and tripped him, snatching his camera.

A representative for the couple said he could not immediately comment on the suit, but said in a previous statement they were "ambushed by two men" on a dark street and acted only in self-defense.

Big screen `Baywatch'

Baywatch may soon be joining the ranks of Dragnet, Starsky & Hutch, Scooby-Doo and Bewitched on the list of old TV shows made into movies.

Movie rights to the skin, surf and sand series -- which starred Pamela Anderson as a sexy lifeguard and David Hasselhoff as her heroic boss -- have been sold to DreamWorks SKG.

FreemantleMedia, which owned the rights to the series, announced the deal Friday.

The studio is aiming for a 2006 release.

Baywatch was telecast from 1989 to 2001, during which time its lineup changed several times.

Moved on

Can there possibly be life after Tom Cruise?

A big question for the insanely saucy yet petite Penelope Cruz, who reportedly took her breakup with the megastar extremely badly.

But as they say, time heals all wounds and all that, and today Cruz is happily dating none other than Matthew McConaughey. The Brit tabs claim Cruz herself confirms the new romance with the actor, who has been previously linked with Sandra Bullock and Ashley Judd and who enjoys playing bongos in his spare time. Entertainment Tonight says Cruz's publicist also confirms it.
