An Elkridge tow truck driver was killed Thursday night when he was hit by a pickup truck while assisting another motorist on Interstate 95 in Howard County, state police said.

About 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Brian E. Helton, 47, responded to an accident on the shoulder of the northbound ramp to eastbound Route 100, police said. While Helton worked behind his tow truck, he was hit by a Ford Ranger, police said.

Police said that Helton was declared dead at the scene and that the Ranger's driver, whose identity has not been released, was charged with driving under the influence.
