George Shillow Weigel, 83, insurance executive

George Shillow Weigel, a retired insurance executive, died of complications from dementia Oct. 19 at Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium. A resident of the Murray Hill section of Baltimore County, he was 83.

Born in Columbia, Pa., and raised to Baltimore, he was a 1939 graduate of City College and earned an economics degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

He joined the Navy during World War II and served in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. He commanded a landing craft tank.

After the war, Mr. Weigel became a Prudential Insurance Co. agent. He retired in 1982 as manager of its Baltimore brokerage.

A funeral Mass was offered Saturday at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, where he was a founding member and had served on the parish council.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, the former Betsy Schmitz, a retired church administrative assistant; two sons, George S. Weigel Jr. of North Bethesda and Dr. John H. Weigel of Port Republic; and six grandchildren. A daughter, Anne M. Weigel, died in 1955.
