On October 22, 2004 MARY BEAR MCCLAY, 88, a former Mathematics Instructor at the University of Mary land and longtime resident of Severna Park, died of complications from stroke in Chattanooga, Tennessee. A Native of the Midwestern Prairies, Mary was educated at Eastern Illinois State Teachers College and the University of Illinois. She married Clarence H. "Mac" Mc Clay, a Mechanical Engineer, in Seattle in 1943. When the Mc Clay family moved to Maryland in 1955, Mary began teaching mathematics at the University of Maryland, where she directed the mathematics program for non-math majors. Mr. Mc Clay, a specialist in thermodynamics and aerospace engineering, died of a heart attack in 1972 at the age of 58. Mary retired from teaching in 1978, and continued to live in Severna Park, where she was active in the American Association of University Women, and a competitive bridge player, with a lifelong passion for books, teaching, gardening, knitting, her family and her dogs. She is survived by a daughter, Susan M. Foote, of Severna, Park, MD., a son, Wilfred M. Mc Clay of Signal Mountain, TN, and two grandchildren, Mark Mc Clay and Barbara Mc Clay, also of Signal Mountain. Arrangements are by the Heritage Funeral Home, Chattonooga, TN. There will be a graveside service and interment at The Mound Cemetery, Charlestown, IL., on October 27 at 1:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, those desiring to make a memorial gift are encouraged to make contributions to the Mary Bear Mc Clay Mathematics Graduate Assistantship Fund, c/o Eastern Illinois University Foundation, 600 Lincoln Avenue, Charleston, IL 61920-3099. A memorial service will be held at Severna Park Evangelical Presbyterian Church., at a date to be announced.
