Week Seven: Nfl Preview

October 24, 2004|By KEN MURRAY | KEN MURRAY,SUN STAFF

GAME OF THE WEEK

Jets (5-0) at Patriots (5-0)

Line: Patriots by 6 1/2

Lowdown: Bill Belichick's crew goes for another record - most consecutive regular-season wins, 18 - against its only threat in the AFC East. The Jets haven't beaten a team with a winning record (their opponents are a combined 6-22); the Patriots' opponents are only 9-17. Both secondaries look vulnerable, but Patriots have a knack for making the key plays.

The pick: Patriots

WORTH SEEING

Jaguars (4-2) at Colts (4-1)

Line: Colts by 9

Lowdown: Byron Leftwich's gimpy ankle is problematic, and the Jaguars will need to throw against the Colts. The Colts, coming off a bye, can take a stranglehold on the division with a win today.

The pick: Colts

Eagles (5-0) at Browns (3-3)

Line: Eagles by 7

Lowdown: Eagles WR Terrell Owens continues to berate Browns QB Jeff Garcia, his former teammate. At least Garcia is respected in the Browns' locker room, which might make this interesting.

The pick: Browns

Lions (3-2) at Giants (4-1)

Line: Giants by 6 1/2

Lowdown: The Lions' offense already is in the dumpster, and the Giants' defense already has forced 15 turnovers. Unless the Lions can run the ball, it'll be a long day.

The pick: Giants

Falcons (5-1) at Chiefs (1-4)

Line: Chiefs by 4

Lowdown: Beating the Ravens wasn't the fix the Chiefs had hoped for. They're 0-2 at home, and Atlanta is 2-0 on the road. The Chiefs' Priest Holmes faces the No. 1-ranked team against the rush in a key matchup.

The pick: Falcons

Cowboys (2-3) at Packers (2-4)

Line: Packers by 3 1/2

Lowdown: The Packers can't win at home (0-3), either, and Dallas coach Bill Parcells is on a rant after blowing the Pittsburgh game. Playing at Lambeau Field may not be as intimidating as facing Parcells in the locker room.

The pick: Cowboys

Titans (2-4) at Vikings (4-1)

Line: Vikings by 7

Lowdown: Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper has thrown 18 touchdown passes, but he may not have Randy Moss, who has eight of them. The Titans have serious issues in their secondary.

The pick: Vikings

Rams (4-2) at Dolphins (0-6)

Line: Rams by 6 1/2

Lowdown: The Rams are showing some resiliency, although they barely beat the Bucs on Monday night. The Dolphins might be hungry enough to end the 0-16 speculation.

The pick: Dolphins

HIT SNOOZE ALARM

Chargers (3-3) at Panthers (1-4)

Line: Panthers by 3

Lowdown: The Panthers are a shell of the team they were a year ago, especially vs. the run. That could mean a nice day for LaDainian Tomlinson.

The pick: Chargers

Saints (2-4) at Raiders (2-4)

Line: Raiders by 3

Lowdown: Jerry Rice is gone, but the Raiders won't miss him. This is one team Kerry Collins can beat.

The pick: Raiders

Bears (1-4) at Buccaneers (1-5)

Line: Bucs by 7

Lowdown: Off two stellar performances and with low expectations, Bucs QB Brian Griese will keep the job for now.

The pick: Bucs

Seahawks (3-2) at Cardinals (1-4)

Line: Seahawks by 7

Lowdown: Rice needs to teach the Seahawks' receivers how to catch the ball.

The pick: Seahawks
