Athletes of the Week

October 20, 2004

Brandon Johnson

Broadneck, football

Johnson set school records for carries (35) and yardage (251) in a single game in last Friday's 24-14 victory over 10th-ranked Old Mill.

The 5-foot-9, 187-pound junior, who had 500 yards rushing entering the game, scored two touchdowns, bringing his season total to nine.

Last season, he carried 287 times for 1,395 yards and 19 TDs. He has played varsity for three years.

Johnson also plays basketball and plans to run track in the spring.

Rachel Layer

John Carroll, soccer

The senior played a critical defensive role for the No. 1 Patriots, who allowed only one goal in three games. A freelancing defensive midfielder, Layer is the main reason the Patriots have allowed only four goals, notched 10 shutouts and are 14-0. The highlight was a 2-1 victory over No. 4 Notre Dame Prep. Layer also helped the Patriots to 4-0 victories over Seton Keough and Kenwood. Those three opponents managed a combined 14 shots on goal. Layer, who has played everywhere but in the goal during her four years with the Patriots, also contributed a goal and an assist against Kenwood and an assist against Seton Keough.
