Anne Arundel County police today said one of their officers has been charged with theft for allegedly defrauding the department by claiming he was called to active duty with the U.S. Army.

According to the department, the Western District command discovered in February 2004 that Officer Andrew Barnett had submitted fraudulent documentation stating he had been called to serve in Iraq. An investigation found that Barnett had not been called to active duty from December 2003 to February 2004, as the officer had claimed, police said.

Barnett is scheduled to go on trial on Nov. 18 for the theft charge.

The department would not provide any other details on the case.
