Phelps' mother to speak at Boys and Girls Club's annual dinner on Oct. 21

Debbie Phelps, the mother of Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps, will be a speaker at the Boys and Girls Club of Harford County's 15th annual Steak and Burger Dinner, starting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen.

Phelps is a two-time Maryland Teacher of the Year.

The youth speaker will be Bryant Stewart, a member of the Boys and Girls Club of Harford County. He worked the past two summers in his club's Leaders-in-Training program. At dinner, the club's president, George Hiedelmaier, will discuss "One Campaign," a new long-term initiative.

Proceeds from the event support the Boys and Girls Clubs of Harford County. Tickets are $75; Information: 410-272-8233, ext. 10.

Bel Air concert to mark Welsh choir's 20th year

The Rehoboth Welsh Choir will celebrate its 20th year and the area's Welsh heritage with an anniversary gala presented by the Bel Air Cultural Arts Commission at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church on North Main Street.

The choir, based in Delta, Pa., and performing under the direction of Jeff Tramontana, will perform works from its repertoire of classical Welsh and contemporary American music. Traditional Welsh costumes and culture will also be featured.

Tickets are $10 and are available at Bel Air Town Hall on Hickory Avenue. They are also being sold at Preston's Stationery and at Boyd and Fulford Drugs, both on Main Street.

Make-A-Wish Foundation seeking volunteers

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic Inc. is seeking Harford County volunteers to serve as wish-granters. The nonprofit organization works with children who are facing life-threatening medical conditions and their families. A training session and background check are required.
