State teams starting up this weekend

Four state Division I men's basketball schools besides Maryland - Coppin State, Morgan State, UMBC, and UMES - will have Midnight Madness activities tonight preceding their first practice. Loyola and its new head coach, Jimmy Patsos, will conduct a closed practice at midnight. Tonight and tomorrow's schedule:

Coppin State

Doors open at 8 p.m., followed by three-point shooting contests, basketball games, and performances by dancers, cheerleaders, and models. Also, every member of a Coppin athletic team will be introduced, leading up to basketball introductions at midnight. Festivities conclude with "After Party" at Tawes Center, 12:30 to 4 a.m.


Closed practice at midnight.


Festivities begin at 10 p.m. with three-point shooting and slam-dunk contests. Various members of the men's team will try to unseat 6-foot-6 junior teammate John Zito as the slam-dunk champion. There will also be a variety of contests with prizes, leading up to team intoductions at midnight.


Activities start at 10:30 p.m., followed by slam-dunk and three-point shooting contests and two-ball games. Fans will have the opportunity to have their photo taken with their favorite Hawks player, leading up to team intoductions at midnight.

Morgan State

Doors open at 10 p.m., followed by a blindfolded half-court shooting contest and three-point shooting and slam-dunk competitions. Team intoductions get underway at midnight.

Mount St. Mary's

Practice tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.


Practice tomorrow at an unannounced time.


Practice tomorrow from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
