Repairs close Obrecht, Freter roads, Stoney Lane

The Carroll County Department of Public Works has announced road projects for this week.

Storm drain installation: Gorsuch Road and Center Street roundabout; Penn Hill Road in Valley Hill Farms.

Closed for reconstruction (local traffic only): Obrecht Road from White Rock Road to Route 97.

Closed for bridge reconstruction: Stoney Lane; Freter Road (at the bridge) between Old Liberty Road and Buckhorn Road.

Paving: Lincoln Manor subdivision.

`Art Creations' classes for children start Thursday

The Carroll County Family YMCA is offering "Art Creations" classes for children age 4 to 6 at Westminster United Methodist Church.

"Art in Nature" sessions will be held from 9:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. and from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursdays to Nov. 18.

Topics will include rain forest, seashore, meadow, forest, mountain and arctic art.

The cost is $65, with a 10 percent discount for siblings.

Beef quality program set for cattle producers

Maryland Cooperative Extension and the Carroll County Department of Economic Development are sponsoring a Maryland Beef Quality Assurance Program at 2 p.m. Oct. 20 at Country Acres Farm, 2734 Old Washington Road, Westminster.

This will be a training and certification workshop. The program will offer beef cattle producers information and hands-on training in management practices that produce "defect-free" beef.

Participants will learn how to create and maintain a quality assurance program. Individuals wishing to become state-certified as quality beef producers can take an examination at the conclusion of the workshop.

The agenda includes: a preliminary knowledge assessment, classroom session I, at the Zion United Methodist Church hall, 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.; chute-side quality assurance demonstration and discussion at Country Acres Farm next to the church, 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.; classroom session II and certification exam, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The registration deadline is Monday.
