Maryland State Police were investigating the circumstances of a single-vehicle accident early this morning in Union Bridge that claimed the lives of two people.

According to authorities, troopers from the Westminster barracks responded to a report of a crash about 3:30 a.m. on Quaker Hill Road, just west of Priestland Road. A preliminary investigation found that a speeding Corvette traveling east had veered off to the left side of Quaker Hill Road and struck a tree, police said.

Authorities were investigating why the driver of the Corvette strayed off the road. The collision ejected the two occupants from the car, despite investigators' belief that both were wearing seat belts.

Both suffered fatal injuries. The names of the victims were not released pending notification of next of kin.

Police urged anyone with information about the accident to contact the Westminster barracks' duty officer at 410-386-3000.
