Board of Education candidate forum set Oct. 13 in Ellicott City

The League of Women Voters of Howard County and the PTA Council of Howard County will co-sponsor a public forum for Board of Education candidates from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 13 in the boardroom of the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

Candidates Frank Aquino, Diane Mikulis and Mary Kay Sigaty will give introductory statements and answer questions.

The league will also hold a public forum for 3rd and 7th District congressional candidates from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 26 at Howard Community College's Smith Theatre, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

School system planning budget hearing tomorrow

The public is invited to comment on the Howard County public school system's fiscal 2006 capital budget and the fiscal 2007-2011 capital improvement program during a hearing at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City. The board will hold a public work session on the budget after the hearing.

Those who want to testify are asked to limit presentations to three minutes and provide 15 written copies of their testimony at the time of the hearing.

A public work session and approval of the FY 2006 capital budget and the FY 2007-2011 capital improvement program are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The work session will be held in the Department of Education boardroom.

The school board will hold a regularly scheduled meeting at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 14 in the boardroom. Both sessions are to begin with a public forum during which residents may address the board on topics for which there is no formal hearing process. Advance sign-up is requested.

`Guiding Your Child' class set for parents

"Guiding Your Child," a behavior-management course for parents of children who are developmentally delayed or disabled or who have a learning disability, will be offered by The Arc of Howard County Inc. from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays next week, Oct. 20 and 27, and Nov. 3, 10 and 17, at The Arc's offices, 11735 Homewood Road, Ellicott City.

The cost for the six-week course, taught by Chaya Kaplan, is $20 a family.

Homeschool group to meet for information, support

The Columbia Homeschool Community will sponsor a meeting to share information about homeschooling and offer support from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, 10689 Owen Brown Road, Columbia.

A presentation on science curricula and resources for homeschoolers is planned.

Six-week class on finances to start Oct. 18 at HCC

Howard Community College will offer a six-week course, Take Charge of Your Money, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays, starting Oct. 18, on its main campus, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

The series, is designed to empower individuals to make informed financial decisions.

Registration will be accepted until Oct. 13, or until the class is filled. The cost is $25. Checks, made payable to Howard County EAC, should be mailed to Maryland Cooperative Extension -- Howard County, 3525-L Ellicott Mills Drive, Ellicott City 21043.
