County's volunteer companies plan open houses, events for Fire Prevention Week

This week is Fire Prevention Week. Carroll County's 14 volunteer fire companies are reaching out to the community to promote fire prevention and fire safety to all ages.

Following are some of the locations for activities:

Sykesville: The company has fire-prevention activities lined up that will touch all the elementary schools, day care centers and preschools in the Sykesville-Eldersburg area. Children will visit the firehouse for a puppet show, hear fire-safety lessons, tour of the firehouse and get goodie bags.

Firefighters will also participate in the Knights of Columbus Youth Safety and Learning Expo from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Eldersburg Wal-Mart on Liberty Road.

An open house will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 17 at the firehouse with tours of the building, rescue demonstrations, the Gamber fire boat, Carroll County Health Department and Sykesville Police Department.

The Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department is on Route 32 at Freedom Avenue. Information: 410-795-8021.

Winfield: An open house will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the station, 1320 W. Old Liberty Road. Demonstrations, music, hay rides, Sparky the Fire Dog, a Maryland State Police MedEvac helicopter and other fire companies will be featured, along with tours of the station and equipment.

This week's school activities include visits to Century High and Linton Springs Elementary for fire drills and a presentation to younger pupils.

Manchester: Firefighters will visit Manchester Elementary School on Friday for a fire drill and presentation to the prekindergarten through first-grade classes.

The firehouse is at 3209 Main St. Information: 410-239-2286.

Pleasant Valley: Firefighters will visit Carroll Lutheran School today, give a presentation to Little Friends of Grace Preschool pupils at the firehouse tomorrow and Friday, visit a local preschool Monday, visit the Montessori School of Westminster on Oct. 13 and visit Charles Carroll Elementary School at a later date.

The fire company also will hold a fall festival Saturday. Fire equipment will be on display.

Mount Airy: The company will hold a pumpkin contest from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 24 at the carnival grounds on Twin Arch Road at Route 27. Entry fee is $5 in advance and $7 at the door and includes all supplies. Prizes will be awarded, and fire-prevention and safety lessons will be offered. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes.

Gamber: Firefighters will visit area day care centers and welcome Mechanicsville Elementary School pupils to the station for a fire-safety program.

The station also will participate in the Knights of Columbus Youth Safety and Learning Expo on Saturday and Sykesville's open house Oct. 17.

Union Bridge: The company will hold an open house during its monthly breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday at the firehouse, 8 W. Locust St. Visitors can tour the station and see the equipment and receive fire safety literature.

Firefighters also will visit Francis Scott Key High and Elmer Wolfe Elementary schools with a fire engine and information on fire safety.

Reese: Firefighters will visit Emory Church Day Care Center today and Sandymount Elementary School on Oct. 13.

Lineboro: The company will visit Manheim Elementary School in Pennsylvania and area day care centers.
