Gertrude B. Chase, 85, city schools custodian

Gertrude B. Chase, a retired public school custodian who enjoyed entertaining, died of heart failure Thursday at North Arundel Hospital. She was 85.

She was born and raised Gertrude Blagmond in South Baltimore and attended city public schools. She worked as a custodian in city schools for 35 years before retiring in 1984.

Known by family and friends as Gert, she enjoyed cooking and hosting dinner parties at her Northwest Baltimore home. She was an expert baker and was known for her pound cake, family members said.

Mrs. Chase was married for more than 50 years to John P. Chase, a former motion picture projectionist who died in 1993.

She was a former member of Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Joseph Brown Funeral Home, 2104 N. Fulton Ave.

Mrs. Chase is survived by a nephew, Charles S. Henry III of Baltimore; a niece, Jacqueline Trusty of Baltimore; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
