Real estate panel seeks to clarify law on names in ads

The Maryland Real Estate Commission has proposed a regulation to clarify existing law on real estate advertising.

The proposal would require the name of a realty brokerage to be the same size as the name of the associate broker or salesperson in an advertisement. It would also set size requirements in the use of team or group names. The current law requires the licensed agent or broker to include the full name of the business they are affiliated with in a meaningful and conspicuous manner.

"The commission was concerned with the ambiguity and inconsistency based simply on that language," said Harry Loleas, deputy commissioner of occupational and professional licenses. "There has been a lot of questions on what passes muster in terms of `meaningful and conspicuous.'"

Comments on the proposed regulation can be mailed to the commission's executive director, Elizabeth Beggs, 500 N. Calvert St., Baltimore, MD 21202, or faxed to 410-333-0023, and e-mailed to mrecregcomments Comments must be received by 5 p.m. Oct. 8. A review and final action on the proposal will take place at the commission's public meeting at 10 a.m. Oct. 20 at the Calvert Street offices.
