Betty J. Hechmer, 78, longtime nurse, volunteer

Betty J. Hechmer, a retired nurse and volunteer, died of kidney failure Sept. 25 at Lorien Columbia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The longtime Randallstown resident was 78.

She was born and raised Betty J. Mullendore in Trego, Washington County, and was a 1944 graduate of Hagerstown High School. She was a 1947 graduate of the Union Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and worked at Union Memorial Hospital until the mid-1970s.

She also worked at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Sinai Hospital and Northwest Hospital Center. She retired in the early 1980s.

Mrs. Hechmer delivered food for Meals on Wheels and worked as an election judge.

Her marriage to Robert Leroy Myers ended in divorce. She was married for eight years to Alan Hechmer, who died in 1982.

Graveside services for Mrs. Hechmer will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

Mrs. Hechmer is survived by a son, Robert L. Myers of Mount Airy; a daughter, Kathryn Myers Lating of Havre de Grace; a stepson, Ken Hechmer of Aiken, S.C.; and three grandchildren.
