Defense lifts River Hill by Centennial

Ninth-ranked River Hill received goals from Erika Theisen and Erica Suter and a dominant effort from its defense to take a 2-0 girls soccer win over No. 3 Centennial yesterday in a Howard County game in Clarksville.

The Hawks (5-2) took a 1-0 lead in the first half on Theisen's goal, and Suter scored on a left-footed shot from 22 yards out in the second half. River Hill's defense shut down Eagles standouts Hayley Siegel and Mandy Paizs.

Rose Fillipell and Janie Tankard led the effort against Siegel, helping hand the Eagles (3-1) their first loss.

No. 2 Notre Dame Prep 4, Mount de Sales 2: The host Blazers (7-1) rode a first-half hat trick from Caitlyn McFadden in the win over the Sailors.

No. 11 South River 2, Southern 1: The host Seahawks (6-0-2) received a scare from the Bulldogs but prevailed when Ali Moreland scored a 78th-minute goal to break a 1-1 tie.
