Mayer cancer center holding fund-raiser Oct. 7 in Columbia

The Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource and Image Center, which provides information and support services for cancer patients, will offer an evening of food, wine and cooking demonstrations on the theme, "East Meets West."

The fund-raiser will be held from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at Fretz Corp.'s showroom, 9204 Berger Road, Suite H, Columbia.

The Mayer center includes a library with more than 600 books on cancer-related subjects, brochures and video and audio tapes. Its Web site,, offers links to cancer databases. The center also contains a beauty salon, where cancer patients can receive services from cosmetologists, hair stylists and other professionals and purchases prostheses, wigs, hats and other products.

The American Cancer Society also offers a supply of free wigs at the center, 5900 Cedar Lane in Columbia.

Tickets are $60 for the evening event. Available sponsorships range from $1,500 to $10,000.

Career Links, Success in Style set Autumn Gala

Howard Community College's Career Links program and Success in Style will co-sponsor the second Autumn Gala from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday in the college's Instructional Lab Building, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway in Columbia.

Dense Koch of WJZ-TV will be honorary chair for the event. A live and silent auction, food and wine from local establishments and live music are planned.

Tickets are $50 in advance and $75 at the door.

Career Links provides educational access and support for low-income single parents and displaced homemakers. Success in Style provides free business clothing to disadvantaged women seeking employment.

Voter registration offered at libraries

The League of Women Voters and the Howard County Public Library are offering voter registration.

Registration will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the east Columbia library (410-313-7700); from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Savage branch library (410-880-5975); and from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Miller branch library (410-313- 1950).

Training scheduled for disabled voters

The Arc of Howard County and Howard County Disabilities Services will offer a training session to familiarize voters with disabilities with the new computerized voting machines.

The session will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Howard County Central Library, 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway in Columbia.

Stuff-A-Truck benefit to aid food bank

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks Division of Recreational Licensed Childcare will present Stuff-A-Truck, a community project to benefit the Howard County Food Bank, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Recreation and Parks headquarters, 7120 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia.

Music, face-painting, food and drinks, games for children and entertainment are planned.

Admission is a small bag of nonperishable food.
