An Anne Arundel County man was killed yesterday morning when he lost control of a motorcycle and crashed into a tree, county police said.

Shawn Derek Smallwood, 28, of the 700 block of 209th St. in Pasadena was riding a 1999 Honda motorcycle on Brookwood Road in the community of Elvaton Acres in Millersville about 10 a.m. when he lost control of the bike on a slight rise in the roadway, left the pavement and struck a tree, police said.

Smallwood, who was wearing an approved helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene from severe head injuries. Police said the helmet was found several feet from his body.

Police said the crash was witnessed by two other motorcyclists who were following Smallwood, and that he had been exceeding the 25-mph limit.
