23-year-old man identified by police as shooting victim

Police identified Brian Winder yesterday as the man fatally shot Thursday night in East Baltimore.

Winder, 23, of the 2400 block of E. Federal St., was one of two men shot about 10:30 p.m. in the 2400 block of E. Hoffman St. Police said both were taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where Winder was pronounced dead. A 39-year-old who lives near the scene of the shooting suffered gunshot wounds to his abdomen and forearm and was expected to survive, police said.

Detectives were seeking the masked gunman believed to have fired the shots. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Robert Patton at 410- 396-2100. The killing was the 212th this year in Baltimore, police said. At this point last year, there had been 198.

Tax deadlines extended for Gulf property owners

Marylanders who own hurricane-damaged property and businesses along the Gulf of Mexico will get extra time to file tax returns due this fall, Comptroller William Donald Schaefer announced this week.

Those taxpayers will have until Dec. 30 to file six-month-extension corporation returns, personal estimated income tax payments, and six-month-extension personal income tax returns and estate tax returns.

The declared disaster area includes 12 counties in Alabama, 16 counties in Florida, eight parishes in Louisiana and 10 counties in Mississippi.
