Anne Crockett Cover, 90, model, real estate agent

September 24, 2004

Anne Crockett Cover, a former fashion model and real estate agent, died of congestive heart failure Wednesday at the Blakehurst Life Care Community in Towson. She was 90 and resided for much of her life in the Green Spring Valley and Ruxton.

Born Anne Elizabeth Crockett in Crisfield, she attended the Calvert and Greenwood schools in Baltimore and Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va.

In 1933, she moved to New York City, where she was hired by the John Robert Powers modeling agency. She was featured frequently in Vogue and Harper's Bazaar in photographs by Cecil Beaton and Edward Steichen. She also modeled for Saks Fifth Avenue and other New York stores, and was photographed with stage and film star Leslie Howard.

"She was tall and willowy," said her daughter, Anne Carroll Cover of Ruxton. "She had hazel-green eyes and jet-black hair."

She returned to Baltimore in the late 1930s and married J. William Hill, a founder of the old Piper and Hill residential real estate firm. They divorced in 1954.

Mrs. Cover then became a real estate agent for Chase Fitzgerald and in 1960 married Thomas Cover III, owner of the old Sanitary Laundry. He died in 1997.

Mrs. Cover, who had a flair for decorating, began creating miniature rooms of different historical periods. In the 1970s, several of her rooms were displayed at the Baltimore Museum of Art, and she was interviewed about the hobby by Oprah Winfrey, then with WJZ-TV.

Mrs. Cover was a member of the Mount Vernon Club, Greenspring Valley Hunt Club, Elkridge Club and Historic Hampton.

A memorial reception will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Blakehurst, 1055 W. Joppa Road.

In addition to her daughter, survivors include a son, J. William Hill of Edinburgh, Scotland; a stepson, E. MacIntosh Cover of Savannah, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
