On September 3, 2004, HOWELLCOLUMBUS SHIPLEY, born in Westminster, Md. in 1917. At 18 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During his 13 years in the Navy he achieved the rank of Senior Machinist Mate Chief on the USS Enterprise. After WWII, he worked for the State of Maryland as Chief Stationary Engineer at the Henryton State Hospital. He retired in 1972. Howell enjoyed family, friends, tennis, fishing and living in Florida every winter. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, formerly Mary A. Patterson, two sons, Edward Lee Shipley of Freeland, Md and the late Kenneth Frank Shipley; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at St. James Church in Monkton, Md., at 9 A.M., Friday, September 24, 2004. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society.
