Yvonne M. Stewart, 63, human resources director

Yvonne M. Stewart, retired director of human resources at the state's Spring Grove Hospital Center and a jazz enthusiast, died of cancer Saturday at her Govans home. She was 63.

Born Yvonne Morganette Jackson in Birmingham, Ala., she moved to Maryland about 40 years ago and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland.

She retired two years ago from Spring Grove. She formerly worked in human resources for the Maryland Hospital Association.

A jazz enthusiast, she played clarinet and piano in high school and college. Ms. Stewart was a past president of the Coalition Celebrating the African Music of the Americas and was executive director of the Jazz Expressions Foundation board.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the March West Funeral Home, 4300 Wabash Ave.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Cecilia Rogan of Columbia and Kimberly Yvonne Stewart of Baltimore; a brother, William M. Jackson Jr. of Davis County, Calif.; a sister, Carole Calbazana of Philadelphia; and two granddaughters. Her marriage to Gailand Stewart ended in divorce.
