Nfl Preview

September 19, 2004|By Ken Murray

Colts (0-1) at Titans (1-0)

Line: Colts by 1

Lowdown: Titans can grab a two-game division lead with a win, but they lost twice to the Colts last year, including 29-27 in Nashville. Edgerrin James had 217 rushing yards in Colts' sweep. He had two big fumbles in the opener that he needs to atone for. Expect a big day. Titans were hardly tested in win at Miami.

The pick: Colts

Broncos (1-0) at Jaguars (1-0)

Line: Broncos by 3

Lowdown: Broncos need to clean up their act, especially QB Jake Plummer's lefty throws, to win on road. RB Quentin Griffin may be the latest in the team's long line of high-production runners.

The pick: Broncos

Panthers (0-1) at Chiefs (0-1)

Line: Chiefs by 6 1/2

Lowdown: The Panthers' offense has been depleted by injuries to WR Steve Smith and RB Stephen Davis. Home field and Priest Holmes should make the difference for the Chiefs.

The pick: Chiefs

Seahawks (1-0) at Bucs (0-1)

Line: Seahawks by 2 1/2

Lowdown: Uncertainty of RB Shaun Alexander (knee) makes this tricky. QB Matt Hasselbeck and the defense need to come up big.

The pick: Seahawks

Jets (1-0) at Chargers (1-0)

Line: Jets by 3

Lowdown: LaDainian Tomlinson, the best RB in NFL, is the acid test for Jets' revamped defense. Jets QB Chad Pennington could be the antidote.

The pick: Chargers

Bears (0-1) at Packers (1-0)

Line: Packers by 8 1/2

Lowdown: Bears can't stop Brett Favre. He's thrown for TD in past 24 games against them, and Packers have won past seven.

The pick: Packers

Rams (1-0) at Falcons (1-0)

Line: Falcons by 2

Lowdown: Rams didn't play well against Arizona last week. But Falcons struggled vs. 49ers and they're hurting in the offensive line.

The pick: Rams

Bills (0-1) at Raiders (0-1)

Line: Raiders by 3 1/2

Lowdown: Both teams lost tough games last week. Raiders QB Rich Gannon has the edge on Drew Bledsoe, but Bills have Travis Henry.

The pick: Raiders

Dolphins (0-1) at Bengals (0-1)

Line: Bengals by 5

Lowdown: Dolphins' abysmal offense vs. Bengals' wretched defense. Who blinks? May be a tie.

The pick: Bengals

Texans (0-1) at Lions (1-0)

Line: Lions by 3

Lowdown: Two promising WRs featured - Texans' Andre Johnson and Lions' Roy Williams. But Texans don't seem to get any better.

The pick: Lions

49ers (0-1) at Saints (0-1)

Line: Saints by 7

Lowdown: Saints never make it easy on themselves, but the 49ers will make it easy for them.

The pick: Saints

Browns (1-0) at Cowboys (0-1)

Line: Cowboys by 4 1/2

Lowdown: After beating Kyle Boller, Browns face Cowboys quarterback Vinny Testaverde. He won't miss open receivers.

The pick: Cowboys

Patriots (1-0) at Cardinals (0-1)

Line: Patriots by 8

Lowdown: The NFL honors the memory of Pat Tillman today. Even with his inspiration, the Cardinals don't have enough defense to handle the Patriots' diversified offense.

The pick: Patriots
