Ravens Vs. Steelers

M&t Bank Stadium, 1 P.m., Ch. 13

September 19, 2004

George Kokinis, the Ravens' pro personnel director, sizes up the Steelers:

Strength of offense

Interior of line. Left guard Alan Faneca, center Jeff Hartings and right guard Keydrick Vincent are fundamentally sound and tough. They don't get penalized a lot, they're on the right guys and they stay with their blocks. This is a group that takes pride in the Steelers' mentality of running the football.

Strength of defense

Front seven. They've been together for a while and they know each other. The only new starter is left outside linebacker Clark Haggans, who can put a lot of pressure on the quarterback. Ravens center Casey Rabach will have his hands full with nose tackle Casey Hampton. He's a big bear in there.

Key matchup

Ravens NT Maake Kemoeatu vs. Steelers C Jeff Hartings. Hartings is a physical guy, but he has good feet and isn't an all-out mauler. He has strong hands and is smart, knowing the veteran moves. So, this is going to be a big test for Kemoeatu, who is replacing the injured Kelly Gregg. Kemoeatu played well during camp and in the preseason, but playing Pittsburgh in the home opener is a different story.
