Navy's Johnson opens 2 games to non-team members

September 17, 2004|By Kent Baker

Navy coach Paul Johnson has offered to allow two non-football-playing midshipmen from the brigade to participate in one varsity game each for the first time in academy history.

In an e-mail to the brigade, Johnson said one 1/c member (senior) of each regiment will cover a kickoff in the Oct. 30 Delaware game (homecoming) and in the Nov. 20 Rutgers game, both at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

The idea was originated by Midshipman 1/c Anthony Di- Franco, 2nd Company, during the question-and-answer section of Johnson's weekly radio show.

Each battalion will be able to nominate two 1/c midshipmen to try out on Oct. 18. The practice of non-members of the football team appearing on the field is widely used at Texas A&M.
