Zane Derek Clayton, a cardiac technician, volunteer firefighter and paramedic, died of an allergic reaction to medication Sunday at a friend's Walkersville home. The Mount Airy resident was 23.

Mr. Clayton was born in Washington and raised in Mount Airy. He was a 1998 graduate of South Carroll High School and earned a degree in 2002 in emergency health services from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

He worked as a technician for a Shady Grove cardiologist and was a part-time employee of Frederick County Fire/EMS Operations. He also was a lieutenant with the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Department.

"A big percentage of his time was spent in the fire and rescue services. And when he wasn't working, he was socializing with firefighters," said his sister, Carly Clayton of Mount Airy.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Hyattstown United Methodist Church, 26121 Frederick Road, Clarksburg.

Mr. Clayton also is survived by his parents, Zane Shephard and Dorothy Marie Lewis Clayton of Mount Airy.
