Guard battalion members to begin tour in Iraq

More than 50 members of the 1297th Support Battalion of the Maryland National Guard are scheduled to leave their home station in Havre de Grace this morning for a tour of duty in Iraq.

Maj. Charles Kohler, a National Guard public affairs officer, said the guardsmen first will be taken to Fort Drum, N.Y., where they will receive training and equipment.

The unit is scheduled to be activated for 18 months.
