Ravens Vs. Browns

Cleveland Browns Stadium, 1 P.m., Ch. 13

September 12, 2004

George Kokinis, the Ravens' pro personnel director, sizes up the Browns:

Strength of offense

Stability at quarterback. They went back and forth with Kelly Holcomb and Tim Couch last year. Jeff Garcia has won a lot of games and has completed a lot of passes. He can make plays when plays break down. His mobility and ability to see the field are his biggest strengths.

Strength of defense

Front line. There's talent there with a lot of high draft picks, but it hasn't jelled yet. Defensive tackle Gerard Warren has rededicated himself and wants to prove that he is worthy of where he was picked. Self-admittedly, he probably has not achieved as much as he has wanted so far. From a health standpoint, defensive end Courtney Brown has not gotten on track. It's still early in his career.

Key matchup

Ravens S Ed Reed vs. Browns TE Kellen Winslow. They're both playmakers, both competitive and both from Miami. Winslow is like a big wide receiver. He's athletic, fast and strong. Reed has great anticipation and incredible timing. His vision is certainly impressive. I don't think Winslow's size (6 feet 4, 250 pounds) will be a factor because he can't throw him around downfield. Since you can't breathe on receivers anymore with the new rule emphasis, Reed is just going to have to cover him.
