Red Cross seeking blood donations

The Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Blood Services Region of the Red Cross is reporting a shortage of blood products for patients in area hospitals.

The Department of Homeland Security's decision to raise the terrorism alert level has intensified the need for donations to prepare for a potential attack.

Anyone who wants to donate blood can call 800-GIVE-LIFE. Apheresis (platelet) donors can call 800-272-2123 for information and appointments.

Businesses and community groups willing to hold blood drives should call 800-787-9282, ext. 4925.
