Chamber committee to offer update on Route 140 project

The Transportation Committee of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce will meet to offer an update on improvements to Route 140 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday at Westminster Church of Christ auditorium, Route 97 north at Lamb Drive (one mile north of Airport Drive).

The purpose of the meeting is to:

Update local business representatives and the public on the findings of the Maryland State Highway Administration and Federal Highway Administration Project Planning Study for improvements to the Route 140 corridor.

Have SHA displays available for review.

Provide a forum for public comment on the final alternates under consideration for this project, which extends approximately 2.5 miles along Route 140 from Market Street/Old Baltimore Road to Sullivan Road.

Present the official position of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce on improvements to Route 140 and the creation of a Westminster Bypass.

The meeting is free, but registration is required by Tuesday.

Finishing Touches classes to begin Sept. 21

Belk of TownMall of Westminster will offer its Finishing Touches classes for girls ages 6 to 17 for six weeks starting Sept. 21.

The classes are intended to teach girls to look, feel and be their best, and help them develop self-confidence, poise and good habits.

Finishing Touches for ages 6 to 11 will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Classes for ages 12 to 17 will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays. The teen course also covers basic modeling, fashion awareness, natural make-up and career tips.

The class will conclude with a graduation fashion show at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 in the mall.

The cost is $90, which includes the textbook, tote bag, folder and pencil.

In-store registration will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Chamber schedules networking breakfast

The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce will hold a networking breakfast at 8 a.m. Sept. 28 at St. John Quarters in the Westminster fire hall, 28 John St.

Ned Cueman, the chamber's Transportation Committee chairman, will discuss "Preserving the Character of Our Community -- Maryland Route 140 Through Westminster." He will describe the State Highway Administration's plan for improvements to Route 140 between Market Street and Sullivan Road.

Westminster city officials also have been invited to discuss the plan.

The cost for the meal is $12. Reservations are required by Sept. 21.

Job Shadow Day to be held Nov. 11

The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Carroll County Public Schools, will hold the annual Job Shadow Day for high school juniors and seniors Nov. 11.

The program is designed to give students a look at careers and to give employers an impression of Carroll County's future work force.

Job shadow opportunities are being sought in all industries.

All county employers except home-based businesses are eligible to participate, regardless of chamber affiliation.

The deadline for employers to sign up for Job Shadow Day is Sept. 24. Sign-up forms are available from the chamber, 700 Corporate Center Court, Suite L, Westminster.

The chamber will send employee applicants a packet of information to help plan their Job Shadow Day experience. Students will be recruited by career connections coordinators in the high schools and matched with job shadow openings.

On Nov. 11, participating students will report to their employer hosts and spend the morning observing the company and learning how to prepare for a career.

Afterward, students will attend a chamber membership luncheon at Martin's, Westminster as guests of their employer hosts.

Chamber seminar on marketplace planned

The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce will present a seminar on "Monopolize Your Marketplace" from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 29 at Wilhelm Ltd. Caterers on Route 140.

The cost for members is $69 by Oct. 1 and $99 afterward. The nonmember fee is $395. Deadline for registration is Oct. 22.

Rasmussen to return as United Way chairman

The United Way Community Partnership of Carroll County has announced that Tom Rasmussen will be campaign chairman for a second consecutive year.

Rasmussen is president and chief executive officer of New Windsor State Bank. A Finksburg resident, he is active in many community and civic groups.
